I find it really hard to define the word, ‘race’. And I don’t mean the act of running. I mean, the social category that man divides himself into. Wikipedia says that race is a group of people who share similar and distinct physical characteristics. It goes on to say that there are generally 3 racial groups: Mongoloid, Caucasoid and Negroid. Can you imagine trying to fit each human being into one of these categories? I think it’s absurd. We are all so incredibly different! Take for example, Asians. They are considered to be of the Mongoloid race, but look well at their diversity.
How could we possibly call all these people Mongoloids? The only similarity I see is the fact that they are all human. And they have heads, eyebrows, ears like every other human. Racial grouping should be obsolete. The problem is that it is so deeply engraved in our systems, that that is close to impossible.
I often wonder how it happened, that one race decided that it was superior, and all others should come below it. I mean, how do you think up such an idea? And the leaders brain-washed the multitude into believing that it is true. Then along came colonialization. And let’s be real here, colonisation was rooted in race. Being African, I can’t help but speak with a bit of bitterness. One of the reasons that the Europeans came to Africa, was to ‘civilize’ us. (Civilize: to cause to develop out of a primitive state) I’m sorry, what? I believe we were quite fine before they came. In fact, it could be said that we were in our prime.
On to more recent times, racism is still a big social issue all over the world. I don’t know if you have been keeping up with what has been going on in the States, the ‘land of milk and honey’. Indeed. Racism is through the roof! Black youth are targeted by white police, they are labelled thugs and vandals. People of Arabic descent too, face a similar kind of treatment. Their label is ‘terrorist’. Take note of how media portrays violence in relation to the two groups. A white guy will go and shoot people dead, and they’ll say: he had a few problems with anger management but was working on it, he had a troubled childhood. A black guy will go and do the exact same thing and they’ll say: ruthless, unruly thug murders helpless citizens in cold blood. See where I’m going with this? White privilege is real, whichever part of the world you are in. People can’t seem to shake off the idea of white people being better. Doesn’t it irk you?
This has quickly turned into a rant, because racism is one of the things that ruffle my feathers. Bear with me. So what I’m trying to say is that no race is better than the other. Each person should be given equal privileges simply by virtue of being HUMAN. It all boils down to that. We are human and we are all different. So why can’t we just let our differences complement each other?
Head up, stay strong, move on.
